ClassLink Rewards Two Deserving Seniors with $1000 Scholarships
CLIFTON, NJ, JUNE 7, 2010—ClassLink – delivering 24/7 access to K-12 learning tools – is pleased to announce the recipients of their 7th Annual ClassLink College Scholarship Program. The program is open to high school seniors at participating ClassLink schools who are interested in furthering their education at a two or four-year college. This year’s winners are Edward Valente, Paramus Catholic High School, Paramus, NJ and Erin Gilmore, Hawthorne Public Schools, Hawthorne, NJ.
Seniors from ClassLink high schools across the country were asked to describe one skill or competency learned during their 13 years in school that they felt was invaluable. Numerous entries were received, and ClassLink recognizes and congratulates all of the nominees on their achievements. The scholarship program helps deserving young people achieve their goals in college; the $1000 scholarship may be applied to tuition, fees, books, room and board, or any other education expense.
Edward (Eddie) Valente, a four year honors student, plans to attend Fairfield University and major in Business or International Business with Law School as the next step. Citing “time management skills” as an invaluable lesson learned, Eddie reveals in his essay how teenagers need to reach a balance between production and socialization to “set yourself up for a better future.” Eddie’s references describe the Hometown Hero and Congressional Recognition awards he received after assisting in the rescue of a tanker truck driver, as well as his hard work, respectful manner, intelligence, social consciousness and leadership. A teacher notes he’s “honestly one of the nicest students I’ve had the pleasure of teaching.”
Our second award winner, Erin Gilmore, will graduate first in her Hawthorne High School class of 144 seniors. Her very touching essay describes Megi, her friend and fellow student who struggled with a serious illness. Megi teaches Erin her invaluable lesson: to never give up, be thankful for what you have and “always walk with a smile.” She will be attending Rutgers University in the fall, majoring in the sciences. Erin’s references highlight her as being gifted, remarkable, tenacious, tender, and confident, as well as a willing listener to her friends.
“Our annual scholarship essay contest is just one example of how ClassLink looks to the future,” says CEO Berj Akian. “We are confident that these deserving young people will continue their successes as they start the next chapter of their lifelong education. Congratulations to Erin, Edward and the teachers who successfully prepared them for what comes next.”
The ClassLink College Scholarship is an essay competition and recognizes students who have demonstrated academic success while maintaining a well-rounded life outside of their scholarly pursuits. Since its inception in 2004, the scholarship program rewards deserving students in the ClassLink network of schools.
