Thin Client – “Old” Technology Making "New" Sense

According to two recent New York Times articles*, support of thin client technology is growing and rightfully so.  While the technology has been around for years, the Times quotes HP officials in January 2008 saying they’ve doubled investments in thin client technology for the past 18 months because, “the technology is ready to grow in popularity because of increased concerns about security and energy usage.”

According to the Times, recent progress in hardware, software and networking have “enabled thin computers to mimic the user experience of PCs for most tasks.”  Substantial money savings has definitely rekindled interest – thin clients are lower in initial cost, technical support, software upgrades, security patches, general maintenance, and use far less power.  (“Yearly savings in electric bills can be $150 or more for EACH desktop.”)

Additionally, thin clients are more secure.  They are far “less susceptible to viruses and spyware than PCs.”  If a thin client is stolen, there is no loss of potentially sensitive information, and saving data files and applications on a secure server reduces the risk of data loss.
