Many Schools are readily embracing BYOT

Over the past year, we have seen many changes and much headway in conjunction with technology in our classrooms. One such shift, schools are opening their arms to BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology). This new solution is geared to combat shrinking district budgets and constant technology advances that make it tough for schools to keep their resources updated. Moreover, the cost is high to put these updated technology tools directly in the hands of each and every student. Fortunately, there are other avenues, like BYOT, and Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati, Ohio, is welcoming this newfound concept into their classrooms. In the month of January, they are implementing a "bring your own laptop" program granting 7,800 of their students access to their personal devices inside the classroom. If Forest Hills sees successful results, they plan to roll-out the program for all their students in grades 7-12.

Cary Harrod, Instructional Technology Specialist for the district said the idea of 1:1 implementation has been on their minds for the past five years, "Every time we put a proposal out there for the school board, it comes back as being cost prohibitive." This new approach will allow for cost-savings as well as allowing students the chance to have a full education experience with hands-on technology. To address cost needs for those who are unable to supply their own personal devices the school district is collaborating with local foundations to subsidize some, or even all equipment costs for those families in question. The district has also constructed "student boot camps" to assist families and students with concern over protect their equipment while on campus, how to safely store the computers and other way to guarantee a positive outcome.
