NEA Survey Results: ‘Woefully Inadequate Classroom Technology’

According to a recent survey of America’s teachers, there is almost unanimous agreement in two aspects of the use of technology in the classroom:
- Technology is essential to teaching, learning and to improving student motivation
- Current technology usage is dramatically lacking
The study, published in May 2008 by the National Education Association (NEA), was summarized in T.H.E. Journal article noted below.* The survey reports that, “Both educators’ and students’ use of technology for instruction has been limited in scope and infrequent.”
Why the disconnect between perceived significance and actual practice?
The survey cited a lack of access to instructional software and shortage of technical support. Four key recommendations include:
- Improve Technology Access
- Increase Internet Access, Software, and Technical Support
- Expand Professional Development in Technology
- Encourage Education Association Support for Technology Funding
How can ClassLink help you meet NEA’s technology recommendations?
ClassLink provides access. ClassLink LaunchPad™ provides students and teachers with dependable 24/7 access to their software applications,
files and interactive tools through server based solutions. Staff members or students can access all of their computer applications from any computer, anywhere, from any classroom, a library, a friend’s house or from home. Through the use of thin client technology, school systems can seamlessly utilize PCs (old or new), MACs, thin clients or dumb terminals – all can communicate with each other and open any school software program.
ClassLink provides training. One of our education experts comes to your site to train every teacher, student and administrator to use the ClassLink system. We begin with an orientation that even novice technology users can enjoy and offer an increasing range of elective professional development courses to reinforce learning. Classes are held in the computer labs and/or media centers and are scheduled according to the school's calendar.
Classes do not address a specific curriculum area or grade level, but do address the need of technology in the classroom. Students learn how to access files and applications from anywhere at anytime as well as how to review their electronic portfolio and current assignments. Teacher training includes electronic lesson planning, real time collaboration and easy management of student accounts. Our trainers provide effective methods for integrating technology into the K-12 classroom.
Plus, ClassLink technicians are always available for support!
