U.S. Professional Development Needs Development

The National Staff Development Council (NSDC) has just released their 162 page status report on Professional Development (PD) in U.S. K-12 public schools.  Entitled Professional Learning in the Learning Profession, the report not only illuminates the current state of PD, but also makes great strides in redefining the PD paradigm moving forward.

The most often cited deficiency in PD was its consistency.  Though 90% of US teachers take part in annual PD, they average less than 16 hours per year across all subject matters, leaving our schools laboring far behind other developed countries.

However, more PD is only a partial solution.  Less than 50% of teachers rated the PD they have received as helpful.  This new report suggests that current K-12 PD is too disjointed.  Usually given over the course of a few hours in a single day, the current K-12 PD paradigm does not allow teachers to truly absorb the lessons and thus teachers are unable to implement these techniques in the classroom to improve student learning.  Teachers need more regimented PD, given in more intense blocks and scheduled consistently throughout the year.
