U.S. Math and Science Scores
in a
Global Comparison
The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) recently published their Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS). With the participation of 48 countries, TIMSS draws comprehensive comparisons between U.S. student performance in Math and Science to that of students around the world. The results show; based on an international average score of 500; U.S. students have made strides in Math performance, but remain stagnant in Science.
5 countries achieved definitively higher Math scores than U.S. eighth-graders (Chinese Taipei, Rep. of Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, and Japan)
10 countries out performed U.S. eighth-grade Science scores (in addition to the above; England, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovenia, and the Russian Federation)
According to TIMSS, performance in Math and Science has improved globally, and though the U.S. remains a world leader in these key areas, other countries are making significant gains.
