School systems struggle to improve learning through their investments in technology. Study after study has found that reliable and ubiquitous access to technology results in the most instructional gains. In the past 24/7 ubiquitous access typically meant a fairly expensive 1to1 laptop project. Not anymore.

As detailed in the eSN Special Report “Software Virtualization”*, virtual desktops can be the new 1to1 solution. The report serves as a great primer on the instructional benefits of software virtualization. Also the report shares how savvy districts are using this progressive approach to software delivery as part of new attitudes around accountability and measuring the learning return on technology.

The various models of virtualization offer many benefits including:

  • Improve learning through ubiquitous and reliable software access
  • Any computer can run any application
  • Lengthen the useful life of existing computers
  • Remote access from home
  • Reduce costs by delaying new equipment purchases and simplifying IT management

The article states that “the total cost of ownership within a virtual desktop environment is 35% less than a …..traditional PC environment.”  Notably, there is also a 75% reduction in power consumption, not only a major cost savings but also an area which helps a district “go green.”

How can ClassLink help transform your school system’s technology through virtualization?

ClassLink is the leader in K12 virtualization. ClassLink utilizes thin client technology and designs products exclusively for K-12 school districts to deliver ubiquitous 24/7 access to school software and work files.  Over 1.5 million students and teachers use ClassLink products today.

Although the aforementioned report touches on the various models of virtualization in the marketplace, it falls short of comparing them in a matrix to help readers understand the pro’s and con’s of each virtualization model. To address that need, ClassLink has prepared a whitepaper titled "1to1 Everywhere" to help K12 administrators compare and contrast the various forms of virtualization in the market today.

ClassLink LaunchPad™ provides students and teachers with dependable 24/7 access to their software applications, files and interactive tools through server based solutions.  With patent pending software, ClassLink creates a customized, dynamic desktop to launch any application for that particular user.  With ClassLink Information Console™ (CLiC™), IT staff can manage and monitor all application servers through a single, easy to use interface. Plus, ClassLink technicians are always available for support!

Like some of you, I attended NECC last week. I came away with a good feeling, a feeling that folks are growing discontent with the status quo in educational technology. Educators and administrators who in the past shunned techno-babble are asserting themselves asking probing questions of "how will this help me do my job?" This is great! We need ed-tech to share more of the burden of instructional accountability.

On that topic, at NECC we showed some school administrators new usage reports from our ongoing Project Inquiry. They were amazed. After only a glance at these reports administrators could make better software purchasing decisions, better professional development decisions, better support allocation decisions, better hardware deployment decisions and more.
