With technology becoming increasingly important for remaining competitive in a global economy, the fact that education is ranked the “least technology-intensive enterprise among 55 U.S. industry sectors” by the U.S. Department of Commerce is cause for concern. The case for education to be “much more strategic, aggressive and effective in preparing students” is laid out in a recent study, Maximizing the Impact: The Pivotal Role of Technology in a 21st Century Education System.*
As the rest of the world is catching up to the U.S. in innovation and educational achievement, the study states that in the U.S.:
- Schools currently use technology primarily only as a tool to develop students’ computer and Internet skills
- Schools are not using technology widely, as is often assumed
Recommendations include using technology comprehensively to:
- Develop proficiency in 21st century skills
- Support innovative teaching and learning
- Create robust education support systems
Concrete ideas for each recommendation, questions to self-examine your district’s current technology commitment and web sites for further assistance are included in this important study.
*Study completed by the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.
