The Center on Educational Policy, a well respected independent non-profit research firm recently issued two reports, “Ten Big Effects of the NCLB Act” and “A Public Education Primer. Basic (and sometimes surprising) Facts About the US Education System”. These two reports bring together a host of statistics including funding, test scores, drop out rates, teacher attrition and more.

Cited in Congressional testimony in Washington, the “Ten Big Effects” report takes a balanced look at the last 4 years under NCLB and findings include that the Act is having its intended results.

There is more testing and more accountability. Greater attention is being paid to what is being taught and how it is being taught. Low-performing schools are also receiving greater attention. The qualifications of teachers are coming under greater scrutiny. Concurrently with NCLB, scores on state reading and mathematics tests have risen.”

The message is that accountability is showing effectiveness is clear.

The “Primer” report, meant to inform the reader on basic facts of our nation’s K12 education system, includes…

  • Despite nearly doubling of per pupil spending over the last 3 decades… the percent of US GDP spend on education has been unchanged.

The message here is that funding has and will always remain a challenge.
