Q: What is Information Literacy?

A:  “… the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand.”[1]

As instant response web hits from questionable websites permeate all aspects of learning and ‘Googling’ takes the place of a trip to the bookshelf for a lookup in Miriam-Webster or Encyclopedia Britannica, Information Literacy (IL) skills become vital.

New Information Literacy studies help identify if learners are prepared for the critical thinking challenges in an internet-centric world. The recent ETS study[2] in the area of critical thinking and Information Literacy finds only half of today’s college students can assess a given website’s objectivity. Further, less than half can assess a website’s authoritativeness. Until objective and authoritative online resources are as easy and convenient to access as wiki’s, this trend will likely continue.

Q: How does ClassLink make available objective and authoritative resources?

A: By making it easy for students to cite reputable web resources through ClassLink LaunchPad.

Encouraging students (and faculty!) to use reputable and trustworthy web resources can only be done by providing simple, consistent and reliable access to them. Through ClassLink LaunchPad, you can ensure high quality web resources, both free and subscribed, are always ‘on’ and available to your users from any computer in the district and from home.

Also, follow the lead of some exceptional districts by using ClassLink OnTrack to deliver your Information Literacy (IL) curriculum and lesson plans. Looking to fulfill IL standards? Through OnTrack you can align curriculum to state and national standards, share lessons and rubrics and even create your own great IL resources.
