Superintendent Survey:
"Responding to the Recession"

A recent survey conducted by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) reveals how public school districts have been impacted by the economic plunge and the measures they are taking to cut spending.  After surveying over 800 superintendents across the country, the most practiced steps to saving were:

  • 89% of Superintendents have eliminated, or plan to eliminate all non‐essential travel.
  • 79% have altered thermostats for less heating and cooling in buildings.
  • 74% have reduced, or plan reducing staff‐level hiring.
Many superintendents have also reduced spending on consumable supplies, deferred maintenance costs and increased class size.  While these steps demonstrate pragmatism and preparation, most superintendents fear it won’t nearly insulate them against the dramatic budget cuts expected in the 2009-10 school year.
