New research uncovers true growing cost of technology

New research shows tech support costs have doubled in the last four years, according to a report cited last month in eSchool News.  The technology budget percentage for support has risen from 14% to 28% over this period and in trying to make up the difference, many schools look at cutting costs in important areas like professional development, instructional software, or technology conference travel.

The article, “Report: Tech-support Costs on the Rise,” encourages districts to examine ways to cut tech support costs while simultaneously maintaining a high level of technology availability. Suggestions include:

  • Application servers lengthen the useful life of existing equipment
  • Automated solutions to boost staff productivity
  • Make a capital investment that may pay for itself in reduced tech support costs over time
  • Find a solution that allows for centralized software
  • License management
